6 Steps Towards Obtaining Your Real Estate License

Getting your real estate license is easier than you might think. Check out these six simple steps to get started in the real estate industry now.

Imagine setting your own hours, working from your home or office and meeting new people each and every day, that is the type of activities real estate agents are often faced with. It’s no wonder why becoming a real estate agent is one of the most sought after careers in the United States and continues to grow by leaps and bounds each year.

Real estate agents are in a unique situation that allows them to be self employed and work for their employer/broker at the same time. They can choose to work hours that fit around their schedule and have the opportunity to make as little or as much money as they deem necessary.

Every state now requires real estate agents to be licensed, this allows Real Estate Commission to oversee and regulate the industry. Getting your real estate license is much easier than you may be thinking and can be obtained relatively quickly for a reasonable amount of money. Here are the steps you should take to get your license:

  • Complete Your Pre-License Education - Every state now requires licensees to complete some kind of pre-license education. Typically, this will consist of around 40 to 60 clock hours in a state accredited pre-licensing course. These courses usually run around a couple hundred dollars and in most states they can be taken online or in a classroom setting, depending on which environment you learn from the best.
  • Verify Your State Requirements - Once you have completed the pre-licensing requirements issued by the state, you are going to want to verify that there are no other courses or actions needed on your part. You can visit the state commission website or a number of other online sources to complete this. You may need to provide the state with copies of your fingerprints, this is a common request and will only cost around twenty-five dollars. Every state has different requirements, so knowing what will be asked of you is very important.
  • Complete Your Application - Now is the time to fill out your real estate license application to the fullest and submit it to the Real Estate Commission. Depending on your state, this may need to be mailed, faxed or delivered in person.
  • Find a Sponsoring Broker - If your state does not require a sponsoring broker please skip this step. If your state does require a broker to hold your license, you will usually need to find one before being allowed to take the exam. Consider this step as finding a new job. You will have to work under the broker that holds your license so find a company that you would like to work for and talk to the broker. Most real estate firms are eager to take new agents so this process should be fairly easy.
  • Take the Real Estate Exam - Once the state has your application they will schedule your testing date with a state approved testing facility. The majority of states require applicants to pass the exam with a score of seventy-five percent or better. You may want to find a sample exam online to study before taking the actual test.
  • Get Your License and Go to Work - Would you believe me if I told you that was all there is to it? Well, guess what, it is! At this point you should now have your license, a company to work for and be ready to get your new career started. You may want to find a top agent that is willing to take you under his or her wing until you get to know the ropes a little better.

There is lots of information and resources available to help you get the training you need to succeed in this competitive industry. It would be in your best interest to learn about search engine optimization to get your real estate website up and running, as well as learn the old tried and true tactics of door knocking and mailings. You will want to find any advantage you can to stand out and make a great living.
